ALA JOJATU
Violinist ALA JOJATU was appointed to the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s violin section in
April, 2011. She was born in Moldavia and began studying the violin at the age of six. Upon completing
her studies with the renowned violin teacher Stefan Gheorghiu at the Bucharest Academy of Music, she moved to Boston.
She received her Bachelor of Music degree from The Boston Conservatory and the Master of Music degree from Boston University,
where she studied with Lynn Chang and Boston Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Malcolm Lowe. She was awarded full scholarships
for both degrees.
As a soloist Mrs. Jojatu (married to BSO cellist Mihail Jojatu) has appeared with Moldova National
Radio and Symphony Orchestras, The Boston Conservatory Symphony Orchestra as well as the Boston University and Bucharest Academy
of Music Symphony Orchestras. In 2004 she became the concertmaster of Indian Hill Orchestra, occupying the Reynolds
Chair endowed in perpetuity.
Ala has also performed regularly with the Boston Pops, Philadelphia Orchestra, New
England String Ensemble, and Cantata Singers. As a chamber music performer, Ala has performed on the Hammond Performing
Arts Series, as part of the Tancrede Trio. She has also collaborated in chamber music concerts with members of the Boston
Symphony Orchestra.
Mrs. Jojatu has won top prizes and awards internationally, including the concerto competition at The
Boston Conservatory, performing Alban
Bert's violin concerto; Second Prize at the "Jeunesse Musicales" international violin competition; First Prize
at the Kishinev and Brasov international violin competitions; and Honorable Mention at the Kloster Schontal international
violin competition.
